Telemetry is the data transmission by wireless systems for control and monitoring.
There are different technolgies for wireless transmission, from WIFI to VHF to GSM and GRPS. Each technology naturally has it´s advantages and disadvantages and after using most of them, we are focusing on the GSM/GRPS network for data transmission of data.
Main advantage is the very good infrastructure nowadays of the mobile telephone network worldwide.
Second advantage is the high reliability and world wide reach of the mobile network.
Further argument for GSM/GRPS data transmission is the economic equipment and low operating cost. GRPS allows access via the internet.
The biggest disadvantage is the data security. GSM and GRPS communication can get intercepted. But this is valid for almost all alternative wireless communications unless precautions are taken.
Very remote access is not given although the mobile phone networks are covering most areas, some are still not covered or cannot get covered as e.g. the high seas.
GSM/GRPS based data transmission is not totally real time - delays for responses to data requestas can take seconds or minutes depending on the mobile telephone network.
But GSM/GRPS is beating all other wireless principles.
